That makes 25 weapons seized by the department in just the past month, during a time when three victims were killed by gunfire in less than two weeks.

Street Crime Detectives Yamil Pimienta, John Traynor, Mustafa Dombayci and Mohammad Bashir found 100 or so people drinking and playing loud music in the area of Carroll and Governor Streets around 1 a.m.

A man in the group handed a gun to another man who then put it into a bag as both bolted into the courtyard area of the Inca Village Apartment complex with several others, Police Director Jerry Speziale Jr. said.

Dombayci and Bashir drove to another exit of the complex to cut them off while their fellow investigators pursued the pair.

As they ran, Edwin Aa’zhone, 24, dropped a handgun, Speziale said.

The other man, 25-year-old Jamir Clark, threw the bag with the other gun onto a resident’s porch, the director said.

Officer James Iandoli, who came in through another route, cut both men off and took them into custody with help from his colleagues.

Police took Aa’zhone and Clark into custody and charged them each with resisting arrest and weapons offenses.

They also recovered both semi-automatic guns – a .45-caliber Glock and a 9mm Zastava Arms pistol, Speziale said.

Each held a high-capacity magazines, he noted, adding that the guns were being submitted the New Jersey State Police laboratory to determine whether they may have been used in crimes.

Speziale commended the “tireless efforts” of the department in seizing so many guns over the past month, which he said likely prevented a number of deadly incidents.
